True HEPA Filter: The Gold Standard in Air Filtration

A customer from Canada sent us two replacement filters last year. Both were advertised online as “True HEPA.”

After opening them, the difference was obvious.

One used dense, evenly pleated glass fiber media with a proper gasket around the frame. The other looked similar from the outside, but the media area was much smaller and there was no sealing strip at all.

That’s the tricky part of buying air filters.

The label may say True HEPA, but real filtration performance depends on much more than a marketing description.

What does “True HEPA” really mean?

People often ask whether every HEPA filter is a True HEPA filter.

Not exactly.

In most industrial and commercial projects, we pay more attention to recognized test standards than advertising terms. Under EN 1822, H13 filters achieve at least 99.95% efficiency at the most penetrating particle size, while H14 reaches 99.995%.

For our engineering team, the report matters more than the wording printed on the package.

If a supplier cannot explain the test method or provide certification, that’s usually the first warning sign.

Good media alone isn’t enough

One purifier brand asked us why their warranty claims suddenly increased.

After several returned units arrived at our factory, we found the media itself was performing well. The problem came from a plastic frame that had slightly warped during production.

Even a small gap allowed part of the airflow to bypass the filter.

Different environments need different solutions

For these projects, we often recommend a staged filtration system. A primary filter removes larger particles first, followed by a medium filter. The True HEPA stage handles the remaining fine airborne contaminants.

That arrangement usually extends service life and keeps pressure drop more stable.

Buying a replacement filter

Sometimes that’s enough.

Older equipment, however, often requires more information.

If the fan becomes louder, airflow weakens or the pressure drop continues to rise after routine maintenance, it’s time to inspect the filter instead of waiting for visible dust.

One suggestion we often give customers is surprisingly simple—don’t judge the filter only by its color. A dark filter isn’t always finished, and a clean-looking filter isn’t always performing well.
