I’d go through a new one every couple of months and never understood why. I treated it just like my tough Metal Mesh Filter or heavy-duty Industrial Filter — blasting it with a pressure washer, scrubbing hard, using whatever cleaner I had nearby. Every time, the fabric tore, the pleats got crushed, and my pool water stayed cloudy anyway.

Over time, I realized a simple truth: not every Filter Cartridge is built the same.An Air Purifier Filter is made for Dust Filtration — dry, light particles in the air, and most are never meant to be washed. A metal mesh filter can handle scrubbing, soap, and rough treatment. But a pool cartridge is soft, fragile, and designed only for waterborne dirt and algae. Rough handling kills it fast.

After ruining way too many cartridges, I finally found a method that actually works — no fancy gear, no overdoing it.

Don’t forget to turn off the pool pump first. I forgot once and water went everywhere. Just twist the filter cover open and take the cartridge out slowly. If it won’t move, gently twist it back and forth. Don’t pull hard, or the plastic top will break.

Shake off the thick dirt, leaves and sticky gunk into the pool. If you don’t, your hose will get blocked when you wash it.

Use a normal garden hose on a light setting. Hold it sideways and clean between the folds. Strong water pressure only pushes dirt deeper. I tried that before and it didn’t work.

If algae or grease is really bad, soak it in warm water with pool filter cleaner. Don’t use bleach or dish soap. I used dish soap once and the pool got full of foam. Let it sit for an hour, then rinse it again softly.

Check for holes or worn parts. If it’s torn, just get a new one. It won’t filter right if the material is damaged.

Let it dry completely outside before putting it back. I used a wet one once and got mold and bad smells. A few hours in soft sun is enough. Too much sun makes it weak.

I clean mine every four weeks in summer, or when the water looks cloudy. In winter, once before closing and once opening is enough. Cleaning too often makes it wear out fast.

Pool filter cartridges are easy to damage. They don’t need hard scrubbing or strong chemicals. Be careful with them, and they last longer. That way you spend less and keep the water clear.

FAQ

Can I use a pressure washer? No — it damages the pleats and ruins the cartridge.

Is a pool filter cartridge the same as an Air Purifier Filter? No. Air filters handle dry dust; pool cartridges filter wet contaminants.
